What is Seed phrase?

A seed phrase is the master key in human form: twelve or twenty-four words from which a wallet derives every key it will ever hold. Whoever can read the phrase can spend everything it covers; whoever cannot, cannot. There is no bank to call.

The operational rules are old and unforgiving: write it on something that does not burn, keep it where floods and visitors cannot reach, never photograph or type it into anything connected, and never share it with anyone, including support, ever.

How Seed phrase works

A seed phrase is the human-readable master key of a wallet: a sequence of words from which every key and address in that wallet derives. It is not one of your keys; it is all of them, compressed into a form a person can write down and re-enter. Possession of the phrase is possession of the wallet, full stop.

The derivation structure is what makes the format workable: from one seed, a deterministic path generates the tree of addresses a wallet uses, which is why the same phrase in any compatible wallet resurrects the same balances. The phrase is therefore the backup, the migration path, and simultaneously the single most sensitive object your money has.

Handling follows from that triple role. Write it offline, on durable media, in more than one physical location, and never anywhere networked: not a photo, not a cloud note, not a password manager screenshot folder. Restoration is the test that matters: an untested backup is a hypothesis, and the day you need it is the wrong day to run the experiment.

Seed phrase in practice

A wallet fails; its owner enters the seed phrase in a fresh device, and every address and balance reappears, derived identically from the same words. Nothing was backed up per-address; the phrase was the backup for all of them.
